What is a balance sheet?

A balance sheet is a financial statement that summarizes a company’s assets, liabilities and shareholders’ equity at a specific point in time. It is used to gain insight into the financial strength of a company. Assets are typically listed first, followed by liabilities and then shareholders’ equity. The balance sheet is one of the three fundamental financial statements. These statements are key to both financial modeling and accounting.
