Max Heart Rate Calculator

Our online max heart rate calculator estimates the maximum heart rate of an individual, which is the highest heart rate an individual can safely achieve through exercise stress and depends on age.

Max heart rate formula

The most common way to find your maximum heart rate is by using one of the many age-based equations. The most well-known of these is the Fox formula:

Max heart rate = 220 - Age

This means that for a 28-year-old runner, the estimated maximum heart rate would be 220 – 28 = 192.

Examples of calculating max heart rate

  • Example 1: The max heart rate of a 37 years old man is 220 – 37 = 183
  • Example 2: The max heart rate of an 83 years old lady is 220 – 83 = 137

Training With Heart Rate

Once you’ve calculated your max heart rate, you can determine your different heart rate zones by multiplying your max heart rate by the percentage for each zone. For example, if you wanted to find 60 percent of your maximum, you multiple your max heart rate by 0.60.

  • The recovery zone – 60% to 70%
  • The aerobic zone – 70% to 80%
  • The anaerobic zone – 80% to 90%
  • The red line zone – 90% to 100%
