Slope Calculator

The slope calculator determines the slope between two points. You can use this slope calculation tool to find the slope by providing the coordinate of two points. Besides the calculator, you can also learn how to find the slope using the slope formula.

What is ‘slope’?

A slope (symbol: m) is a number that measures the steepness and direction of a line. It can be a positive, negative, zero or undefined value. The larger the value is, the steeper the line.

How to calculate slope?

A slope formula is as below:

(y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1)

where (x1, y1) is the coordinate of the first point and (x2, y2) is the coordinate of the second point of the line to find.

To find the slope:

  1. Find any two points of a line and identify their coordinates.
  2. Input the values into the formula above.
  3. Obtain the result

Note that a horizontal line has a gradient of zero because a horizontal line has the same y-coordinates. A vertical line will have an undefined slope since the x-coordinates will always be the same.

How to calculate the length of a slope?

You can use Pythagoras’ theorem to find the length of the slope. Given the coordinate of the two ends of a slant, square both the difference in x and the difference in y. Add the two values and square-root of the summation. This result is the length of the slope. You may use our online Pythagoras’ theorem calculator to speed up your calculation.

How to use the slope calculator?

To use our slope calculation tool, walk through the steps below:

  1. Enter the x and y coordinate of the first point.
  2. Enter the x and y coordinate of the second point.
  3. Check the result.
