Cyber Monday was coined in 2005 by Shop.org, a website of the National Retail Federation. That's because U.S. retailers are finding that many consumers shop online on the Monday after Thanksgiving. Many people who have just spent Thanksgiving are buying gifts online to give back to family and friends, so it's also a great time for online retailers to boost their sales, with some of the best discounts available online.

Online spending hit $10.8 billion on Cyber Monday, the largest single day of online spending in U.S. history, according to data released by Adobe Analytics on Dec. 1, 2021.
Cyber Monday is also often seen as the start of the Christmas online shopping season, with online sales on that day providing a preview of how online shopping will fare over the holidays. Most businesses offer steep discounts on Cyber Monday to entice consumers to shop.
