What is a square root?
The square root of a number x is a number y such that y2 = x. In other words, a number y whose the result of multiplying y by itself is x.
Square root symbol
The symbol os square root is √. It looks like a tick but is actually called radical. When we want to find the square root of 64, we can write in this way: √64.
Square root examples
Square root example 1: What’s the square root of 100?
The answer is 10, because of 10 * 10 = 100.
Square root example 2: What’s the square root of 81?
The answer is 9, because of 9 * 9 = 81
Can a square be a negative number?
We know that the square root of 64 is 8 because 8 * 8 is 64, but can’t the square root be a negative number? Because -8 * -8 = 64, too.
The answer is Yes. In this case, both -8 and 8 could be the square root of 64. However, when the radical symbol is used (i.e. √64) , the result must be a positive number (or zero).
