What is Data / Information Knowledge Wisdom (DIKW) Pyramid?
The importance of knowledge to individuals and organizations is self-evident. It can be said that the ability of management and application of knowledge has become the core competitiveness of enterprises.
The DIKW Pyramid
DIKW pyramid (also known as DIKW model) is used to represent the structure relationship between data, information, knowledge and wisdom. Generally, information is defined by data, knowledge by information, and wisdom by knowledge.
DIKW model brings data, information, knowledge and wisdom into a pyramid. Each layer is endowed with more characteristics than the next. The original observation and measurement obtained the data, and the analysis of the relationship between the data obtained the information. Applying information in action produces knowledge. Wisdom is concerned about the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement (the quality of being wise).
Knowledge is useful information obtained by filtering, refining and processing from relevant information. Under the special background / context, knowledge establishes a meaningful connection between data and information, information and the application of information in action, which embodies the essence, principle and experience of information. In addition, knowledge is based on reasoning and analysis, and new knowledge may be generated.
