Independence Day (also known as the Fourth of July or July Fourth) is one of the major statutory holidays in the United States. It is celebrated on July 4 each year, commemorating the ratification of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776.
Today, most citizens of the United States still celebrate the Fourth of July the same way they did in the 18th century: with parades, picnics, neighborhood parties, outdoor concerts, sports and fireworks at night. Government offices and many shops and businesses are closed and employees usually enjoy a public holiday on this day.
Independence Day is also a big shopping day, with sales on everything from electronics, health and outdoor products, fashion shoes and bags, as well as cosmetics websites, jewelry and luxury brands.
