Are you a Level 5 Leader? Meaning and Concept
The level 5 leadership is a concept coined by Jim Collins in his 1990s bestselling book “Good to Great”, in which he argued about the importance of the fifth level in transformational companies.
Collins believes that business leaders have a vital role to play in transforming companies from mediocre to great and how most fail to make the transition. He identified several key characteristics in the company that made the leap from good to great as illustrated in this template.
Level 5 - executive: a combination of humility and professional willpower to build lasting excellence.
Level 4 - Effective Leaders: Engage employees in a clear and compelling vision and pursue that vision with determination; motivate the organization to achieve high performance standards.
Level 3 - the competent manager: marshal the people and resources to effectively and efficiently pursue predetermined objectives.
Level 2 – Contributing members: contribute to the achievement of group goals; Cooperate effectively with others in a group.
Level 1 - Highly Capable individuals: make highly productive contributions using talents, knowledge, skills and good work habits.
The fifth level manager is the top of all levels. Its remarkable feature is that it has dual personality: calm and persistent, modest and fearless.
