In 1982, she was awarded the Order of Australia in recognition of her "efforts within the larger context of shared Australian and humanitarian convictions. The United Kingdom and the United States competed for the award, and Mother Teresa was awarded the British Order of Merit in 1983 and became an honorary citizen of the United States on Sept. 16, 1996. Missionaries of Charity Congregatio Missionariarum a Caritate It is founded in 1950, the Catholic religious orders uphold the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. Their goal is to "wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor".
