Eliezer "Elie" Wiesel
(September 30, 1928 – July 2, 2016)

He was a writer, teacher, active politician, Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor.

His family was interned in Nazi Germany's Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II; his mother and sister died in the camp's gas chambers, and his father died of dysentery in the Buchenwald concentration camp. American troops entered the camp in 1945 to rescue the victims, Wiesel was 17 years old. He and his 2 surviving sisters were reunited in France after the war.

He wrote 57 books during his lifetime, most of them in French and English, including the book Night, about his experiences as a Jewish prisoner in Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps.

The Holocaust

The Holocaust refers to the genocide of nearly 6 million Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborating nations during World War II. There were nearly 9 million Jews in Europe at the time, nearly two-thirds of whom were killed, including nearly 1.5 million children. Some scholars claim that the Holocaust should also include nearly 5 million non-Jewish victims, bringing the total number of victims to nearly 11 million. The massacres took place in Nazi Germany, German-occupied Europe, and areas controlled by Germany's allies .

The first large concentration camp, Majdanek, was discovered by the Soviets on the way in on July 23, 1944. on April 29, the U.S. liberated Dachau; the same day, the Soviets liberated Ravensbrück; on May 5, the U.S. liberated Mauthausen; and on May 8, the Soviets liberated the Theresienstadt ghetto. Treblinka, Sobibor and Belzec were not able to wait for the day of liberation, as the Nazis had already burned down these camps in 1943.

The opposite of love is not hate; it’s indifference.

Why is the opposite of love not hate? Both love and hate are strong emotions toward someone or something. The more deeply you love, the more deeply you hate. Hate is very close to love. In this emotion, we pay special attention to specific targets and then put our emotions on them. Therefore, even though we love or hate someone so differently, their origin is very closed.

Once we don't love someone, the most appropriate answer is that we won't pay attention to them, which is indifference. This proves that we have let go of our concern for them. If we really don't want to love someone or something, try to put them down. Don't waste your emotions and energy trying to hate them. That's worthless. Taking the time to love what you love and improve your life would be a better choice for you.
