George Bernard Shaw Quote 02

We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

- George Bernard Shaw

George Bernard Shaw

(26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950)

A British playwright and co-founder of the London School of Economics and Political Science. After earning his living writing music and literary criticism, he became famous for his plays. In 1926, he was awarded the 1925 Nobel Prize for Literature for his "idealistic and humanistic work". Alan Lerner adapted his comedy Pygmalion into the musical My Fair Lady, which in turn became a household name in Hollywood as a blockbuster movie of the same name.

Inspired by his mother, Shaw grew up with a love of music and painting. He came from a poor and broken family, with neither a backer nor anyone to guide him. But with his strong will, he made a wide impact in many fields and became a world figure in literature and social thought for half a century.

Is a 60 years old man old? What is the "old" mean, for physical or mental?

Having lived or existed for many years.

When talking about old age, we usually define it in terms of age or physical growth. However, sometimes whether we are "old" is not measured by its age, but by our spiritual age. Once we think we are no longer young, then we become "old".

This quote is telling us the same thing. No matter how old we are, we can choose to stop playing or not play, it's our choice. If we are still having fun while we are playing, we are still a "young" person. On the other hand, once we think we are no longer young and choose to stop playing, we become older, even if we are only a teenager. Our mental age is not limited by our physical body.
