What is Drexler/Sibbet Team Performance Model?

The Drexler/Sibbet Team Performance Model was developed by Allan Drexler and David Sibbet in the 1980s which is useful tool for team building and maintenance techniques, consisting of seven phases divided into two groups to help optimize the team workflow.

Drexler-Sibbet Groups

  • Creation stage: The first four phases are included in the this phase group, where the team forms and becomes a unified unit.

  • Maintenance phase: After the group is adjusted and established, the maintenance phase begins. The last three stages are included in this group.

Drexler-Sibbet 7 Stages of Team Development

Orientation

Why am I here? This is where the team understands why they came together.

+ Together, Belonging

- Fearful, Insecure, Unfocused

Trust building

Who are you?

+ Sure, Confident

- Superficial, Cautious, Lack of confidence

Goal clarification

What are we doing?

+ Common vision, Clear goals

- Apathetic, Competing unnecessarily, Skeptical

Commitment

How are we doing?

+ Clear division of roles in the team, Clear decisions in the team

- Resistance

Implementation

Who, what, where, how and when? Is everything carried out as agreed?

+ Clear processes, Discipline

- Missed deadlines, Conflicts, Confusion

High performance

Flexibility, synergies and anticipate changes to perform in the stage of great importance to good.

+ Synergy, Spontaneous interaction

- Disharmony, Overload

Renewal

Are we going to continue as we are now? Continuity requires consideration of how the team should proceed in the future.

+ Party, Appreciation

- Burnout, Boredom

When you follow the arrows of the model, there is always a basic problem at each stage. Each stage evokes the feelings of team members, both positive and negative. The arrows that go down represent steps that were previously skipped or require additional attention. If we skip one too quickly, the step initially seems to save time, but according to Drexler and Sibbet, this will eventually lead to delays or long-term setbacks.
