Force Converter

The force converter is a handy unit conversion tool that lets you quickly change between different units of force. Whether you want to convert a newton value to dynes, newton to pound-force or any other conversion between popular units, you will find this force converter useful. Besides the force conversion tool, this page also provides you with information about force conversions and the background of various force units.

List of force units

Our force converter supported the most popular force units:

  • newton (N)
  • dyne (dyn)
  • pound force (lbf)
  • pond (pond)

Force conversions

The force conversion formulas below show you how various force units can be converted into newtons:

  • 1 dyne [dyn] = 0.00001 newton [N]
  • 1 pounds-force [lbf] = 4.448221615255 newton [N]
  • 1 pond [p] = 0.00980664999999998 newton [N]

Newton unit

The newton (symbol: N) is the International System of Units (SI) derived unit of force. One newton is the force needed to accelerate one kilogram of mass at the rate of one meter per second squared in the direction of the applied force.

1 newton ≡ 1 kilogram * meter/second²

Newton was named after Isaac Newton in recognition of his work on classical mechanics, specifically Newton’s second law of motion. The formula of Newton’s second law is as below:

F = m * a, so the newton is 1 N = 1 kg * 1 m/s²

where:

  • F (Force) is the net force applied
  • m (mass) is the mass of body
  • a (acceleration) is the body’s acceleration

Thus, the net force applied to a body produces a proportional acceleration. In other words, if a body is accelerating, then there is a force on it.

Other force units

Besides newton, there are other units of force. What is dyne? What is pound-force? This section gives you a brief description of various popular force units.

dyne (dyn)

The dyne (symbol: dyn) is a unit of force specified in the centimeter-gram-second (CGS) system of units, a predecessor of the modern SI. One dyne is equal to 0.00001 newton, or 10 µN (micronewtons), or to 10 nsn (nanosthenes) in the old meter-tonne-second system of units. The dyne is defined as “the force required to accelerate a mass of one gram at a rate of one centimeter per second squared”:

1 dyn = 1 g·cm/s2 = 10−5 kg·m/s2 = 10−5 N

pound force (lbf)

The pound force (symbol: lbf) is a unit of force in some systems of measurement including English engineering units and British gravitational units.[1]

pond (pond)

Pond (symbol: p) , also called or gram-force (gf), is an obsolete gravitational metric unit of force. It is equal to the force exerted by one gram of mass in a standard gravitational field.

How to use the force converter?

To perform a force conversion, walk through the steps below:

  1. Enter the source value of force into the box at the top left.
  2. Select the unit of the source from a drop-down menu. Let’s say you want to convert 1 dyne into newton unit, enter 1 and then select dyne to be the unit.
  3. Select the unit of the target.
  4. The force conversion is automatically performed when all necessary information is entered.
