Fast-fashion brands Suffered a Global Meltdown

  • Uniqlo's first-quarter profit plunged 46.4%.

  • H&M, the world's second-largest clothing retailer, reported net profit of 2.55 billion Swedish kronor ($313 million), down 30 percent from 3.51 billion kronor ($430 million) a year earlier.

  • Zara, the leading fast fashion brand, has seen growth, but it mainly relies on the increase of the number of stores, and the growth has slowed down considerably.

Fast Fashion VS. Slow Fashion

Fast Fashion and Slow Fashion are two concepts that are polar opposites. The goal of Fast Fashion is to produce (and sell) as many items as possible in the shortest possible time in order to make as much profit as possible; typically with little to no emphasis on environmental aspects or human rights. Slow Fashion tries to counteract these aspects and to produce fashion fairly, in a way that results in less harm to the environment and workers being treated fairly.

Production typically takes place in developing countries where standards are not respected. Furthermore, workers do not receive fair wages.

Slow Fashion

Water is often recycled and filtered so that no pollutants get into the wastewater.  Clothes can be repaired, sold, exchanged, or donated to create a circular economy. In this way, waste is reduced.

An EU report said in the year 2015 the global textiles and clothing industry caused:
