Fast Fashion VS. Slow Fashion Infographic

The so-called fast fashion means that new products are fast, affordable and keep up with fashion trends. ZARA is the initiator of fast fashion. Popular fast fashion brands such as HM, Uniqlo, Zara, CA, JackJones, Only, Vero Moda, MIX-BOX, etc. have set off a "fast fashion" trend.

When consumers are immersed in the trend of fast spending for a some time, aesthetic fatigue gradually occurs. The classic, lasting and unique era of "slow fashion" has come back again. Slow fashion is beyond the season and time, and is an eternal classic.

With the promotion of modern "green" life, "slow" not only caters to consumers' nostalgic psychology, but also returns to nature and classics, making the trend become the ornament in life. One of the elements of "slow fashion", is once again the dominant theme of life, and consumers are more concerned about the long-term value of goods.

Fast-fashion brands Suffered a Global Meltdown

  • Uniqlo's first-quarter profit plunged 46.4%.

  • H&M, the world's second-largest clothing retailer, reported net profit of 2.55 billion Swedish kronor ($313 million), down 30 percent from 3.51 billion kronor ($430 million) a year earlier.

  • Zara, the leading fast fashion brand, has seen growth, but it mainly relies on the increase of the number of stores, and the growth has slowed down considerably.

Fast Fashion VS. Slow Fashion

Fast Fashion and Slow Fashion are two concepts that are polar opposites. The goal of Fast Fashion is to produce (and sell) as many items as possible in the shortest possible time in order to make as much profit as possible; typically with little to no emphasis on environmental aspects or human rights. Slow Fashion tries to counteract these aspects and to produce fashion fairly, in a way that results in less harm to the environment and workers being treated fairly.

Definition

Fast Fashion

A Business model of the fashion industry whereas as many collections as possible are brought to market in the most short period possible.

Slow Fashion

Slow Fashion is a counter-movement, in which attention is paid to a sustainable and conscious approach to fashion.

Consumption

Fast Fashion

A lot of clothing is bought in a short time. But the purchased items are not worn for long, as they quickly go out of fashion.

Slow Fashion

Attention is paid to sustainable consumption, where only what is really necessary is bought. Value is placed on eco friendly materials.

Materials

Fast Fashion

Fast Fashion clothes are usually made of synthetic fibers (polyester, elastane, etc.).

Slow Fashion

Slow Fashion clothes are made from natural fibers such as cotton or recycled fabrics.

Production

Fast Fashion

Production typically takes place in developing countries where standards are not respected. Furthermore, workers do not receive fair wages.

Slow Fashion

Production takes place either in Western countries or in developing countries where human rights, standards, and fair wages are respected.

ECO

Fast Fashion

Fast Fashion is responsible for a lot of water pollution through the use of chemicals and microplastics. 80% of all clothing is thrown away, only 1% of clothing gets recycled.

Slow Fashion

Water is often recycled and filtered so that no pollutants get into the wastewater.  Clothes can be repaired, sold, exchanged, or donated to create a circular economy. In this way, waste is reduced.

An EU report said in the year 2015 the global textiles and clothing industry caused:

  • 1,715million tons of CO2 emissions

  • 92 million tons of waste

  • 79 billion cubic meters of water
