What is PERT Chart?

One of the most challenging jobs that any manager can take on is the management of a large-scale project that requires coordinating numerous activities throughout the organization. A myriad of details must be considered in planning how to coordinate all these activities, in developing a realistic schedule, and then in monitoring the progress of the project. Fortunately, PERT (program evaluation and review technique) is a powerful technique that can assist the project manager in carrying out these responsibilities for planning and displaying the coordination of all the activities in a manageable manner.

What PERT Chart attempt to solve?

Projects that involve more than one person and more than one step pose the following questions:

  • What tasks need to be done to complete the project?
  • When and in what order will these tasks be done?
  • Who will do each task?
  • What are the intermediate deadlines (e.g., status reports), and what will be done by these deadlines?
