Snow Forecast Infographic

Snow is made up of individual ice crystals that grow in the atmosphere, usually in clouds, then pile up on the ground, then melt, slide, or sublimate away.

Snowflakes are made of ice crystals formed from fragments of dirt in the air. There can be as many as 200 crystals in each snowflake!

Snow is so much fun. There are many recreational activities that require snow, like snowboarding,  snowball fights, skiing, snowman and snowmobiling.

"Snow was falling, so much like stars filling the dark trees that one could easily imagine its reason for being was nothing more than prettiness." - Mary Oliver

When it gets cold enough, the snow will start to fall, slowly covering it with a white blanket. When this happens, the universe takes on a romantic quality, reminiscent of fairy tale worlds.

Here are some Fun Facts of Snow:

  1. Snowflakes always have six sides -- the water molecules made of snowflakes can only join together in a certain way to form a six-sided ice crystal.

  2. Snow is actually colorless -- Snow is actually colorless - like most natural materials, it absorbs some sunlight, but the visible sunlight is white, which gives it color. So sometimes snow appear to be blue or even pink.

  3. Snow Blindness - Snow reflects high ultraviolet radiation levels that can cause something called snow blindness. That's why you should go out in the snow with sunglasses, masks or other protection for your vision.
